Identity Theft

What is identity theft?
Identity theft occurs when someone acquires your personal information and uses it without your knowledge to commit fraud or theft. It is a serious crime and cases are growing. An all-too-common example is when an identity thief uses your personal information to open a credit card account in your name.

No matter how cautious you are, there is no way to completely prevent identity theft from occurring. But there are ways you can help minimize your risk. This page contains valuable information on how you can protect yourself by managing your personal information wisely, the warning signs of identity theft, and what to do if you do become a victim.

Helpful Tips

Before revealing any personally identifying information (for example, on an application), find out how it will be used and secured, and whether it will be shared with others. Ask if you have a choice about the use of your information. Can you choose to have it kept confidential?

Check your credit report
Order a copy of your credit report from each of the three major credit-reporting agencies every year. Make sure it is accurate and includes only those activities you have authorized. The law allows credit bureaus to charge you up to $9.00 for a copy of your credit report.

By checking your report on a regular basis you can catch mistakes and fraud before they wreak havoc on your personal finances. Don't underestimate the importance of this step.

Cookies

Internet Banker uses cookies to keep track of a user's session. When a user logs into Internet Banker, the Web site sends three cookies to his computer. The first two act as a laundry claim check; they are merely sequentially assigned numbers. The third is a large random string that allows us to verify that someone isn't trying to impersonate a legitimate user by guessing the value of the first two cookies. The cookies are only valid for one session; each time a user logs in, he receives a new set of cookies. We use the cookies to ensure that the user has entered a valid Internet Banker ID and PIN, and to ensure that the user's session has not timed out. It is very important to use 'Logout' when exiting Internet Banker so that your session is closed and cookies are dropped. The use of cookies also allows us to speed up Internet Banker by temporarily storing some user information on our Web server's memory. Accessing the user's information in memory is much faster than having to retrieve it from the host or from a database every time it is needed. When the user logs off or the session times out, the information held in memory is discarded. It is possible to create a Web site like Internet Banker without using cookies. However, the security aspects of such a site would be much more obvious to the user and, therefore, less secure. We feel that requiring cookies for Internet Banker is a small price to pay for the added security and improved user experience.
